Irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is the set of symptoms characterized by (often vague) abdominal pain, bloating -that is at least what patients say they feel-, and alterations in the rhythm of evacuation (constipation and/or diarrhea) that are generally located in the colon, although it is now known that they affect all the digestive tract, starting with the esophagus. There is no doubt that most of the symptoms are primarily felt in the endgut and then in the small bowel.
This is why this functional disorder has for long been known as irritable colon, spastic colon, or even as mucous colitis (in consideration of a quite unsual symptom).
