Herpes Zoster

Herpes zoster

Varicella is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), found in the Herpetoviridae family. In spite of the fact that this disease is usually mild and self-limited in immunocompetent individuals, it can sometimes become severe. It can be said to be the most frequent exanthematous disease, as well as the most contagious one, affecting mostly children under 14, though new borns and adults can also be affected. The herpes virus is made up of a lipoprotein-layered, double-chained DNA genoma that helps the virus adhere and penetrate, and determines a primoinfection-Varicella-, and a reactivation -Herpes Zoster, whose evolution depends primarily on the patient´s susceptibility and his/her immunological condition.
