Catarrh in children

Catarrh-in-children

This word, which derives from the Greek “katarrhus” and means “flowing downwards”, is used to denote the pathologic increase in the mucosal secretion of the respiratory organs. This generally results from infections of the upper respiratory airways (i.e. nose, throat, trachea, larynx and nasal sinuses), and is commonly caused by a virus or by allergic processes. Viruses spread much more in enclosed areas, and that is why they are much more common when holidays end and the school period begins and kids are in everyday contact with each other for hours inside
closed classrooms. This is also the reason why catarrh is more frequent in day care centers, kindergardens, and big families. Neither kids nor babies are immune. Although catarrh is not very debilitating for kids, it is nonetheless a condition that makes parents become concerned.
