Pain and Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease of the joints characterized by the progressive degeneration of the joint cartilage. One in seven people all over the world suffer from joint pain and physical disability. Before 45 years of age, it is more frequent in men than in women, who usually become affected after 55. It can be radiologically shown in every person older than 75. People can also be genetically or laborly predisposed. In spite of the fact that the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis is known, the reason why certain joints are painful while others are not is still not clear. Besides, there is a discrepancy between the severity of the damages shown in X-rays and the symptoms of patients.
