Pregnancy
The baby develops inside her mother´s abdomen, living together although separately so that it is not rejected as an alien body. Mother and baby are connected through the placenta, which allows dissolved substances to go through it but rejects blood cells and big protein molecules. The circulation of the fetus and her mother has a very extensive contact area. After the baby has been born, the umbilical cord is cut, this being the moment when the baby´s lungs are to start functioning, and the oval foramen, which communicates both upper cavities of the heart, closes down.
