Asthma in Infants

Asthma-in-infants

It is the obstruction of the airways, caused by different stimuli and characterized by mucosal edema, hypersecretion, and contraction of the bronchial smooth muscle, potentially reversible by itself or by the use of bronchodilators. There are basically two types of asthma: extrinsic and intrinsic. In children, the former prevails, whereby certain factors sensitize the mast cells of the bronchial smooth muscle. This results in the release of chemical mediators acting directly on the bronchus so that it contracts.
