The 2009 outbreak of the pandemic flu is caused by a new influenza A (H1N1) virus that is not related to other seasonal influenza viruses and that hasn’t been seen in humans before. The World Health Organization (WHO) referred to the family of the virus by the A letter, and to the viral agents that possibly mutate by the letters H (hemagglutinin) and N (neuraminidase).
