The skin is the largest organ of the human body. It is made up of three layers: the epidermis, or external layer, is the first defense line and is made up of flat cells called squamous cells; the dermis, composed of collagen fibers and fibrous connective tissue, and the hypodermis, made up of fatty tissue. Each of these layers provides specific functions to the skin and protects the body from temperature, environmental and toxic substances, and they also act as receptors of sensations.
